Video Game Review: Marvel Puzzle Quest

marvel-puzzle-questI really enjoy this Match-3 game, between PC and Tablet I’ve put in well over 100 hours into it. Got every single reward from the tutorials, placed well in a few Story events (which are an interesting system of different timed thematic storyline events that spit out rewards every day or three) because I have pockets of time through the day which this fills nicely. Even dabbled a bit into the Versus system, where you fight other players’ teams for rank and rewards, but the AI controls the opponent teams since Match-3 gameplay doesn’t lend itself well to a realtime PvP system at all.

My roster’s not as developed as long-time players yet, I have a bunch of 2-star heroes, a number of 3-stars with 1 or 2 powers, and a couple 4-stars from event rewards that I lean heavily on. (Star basically = rarity/power rating, with 1 stars being the lowest and 4 being the highest with a 5 now just released in an update). Enemies in story fights seems to scale according to your overall roster level, which is neat, because it allowed even my newer PC account to jump right in to a story event and place high enough to get top tier rewards.

The game is F2P with microtransactions, but the MT’s are so RNG based that you don’t really get to P2W very effectively unless you spend a ton, I think, and even then you can win loads of the same MT items just from several hours put into the story events, or by focusing your free time into an event that you think you can do well in.

Yet I hesitate to give this game a positive recommendation. I like it, but one thing really irks me. As a microtransaction-based game, it’s unforgivable in my eyes that the accounts from different platforms play together but people cannot access their mobile account on PC and vice versa. If you are making a microtransaction game, especially since I noticed the mobile version already has Google+ and Facebook integration, you have to have this basic functionality since the game’s pricing model is based on constantly spending money.

So while I like the game, I will not give it my recommendation until this is implemented as I feel that this is a necessary step for them to earn my thumbs up. They apparently have manually merged some accounts “in the past” but have since stopped doing so for everyone else.
